The job we do here tends to breed a mild case of optimism, because we spend a lot of time talking about new ideas. If we spent a lot of time talking about the status quo, we'd be more pessimistic because so many basic institutions -- political, financial, medical and cultural -- all seem broken.
So today on the Nose, I'm going to ask our panelists -- and anybody sitting out there who feels like making a phone call -- how they feels as the days of 2011 tick down. What gave you hope? What worried you? For me, the most profoundly hopeful sign is the so-called DIY revolution. It seems more and more likely that we'll have to take many matters of our lives into our own hands, and the good news is that we seem to have the tools to publish our own books, monitor our own health, launch our own political movements and create our own workplaces.
