The president of Connecticut State Colleges and Universities has unveiled a plan to consolidate the state's 12 community colleges into a single system. Mark Ojakian said the change would create a financially stable future for the state’s community colleges with a projected $28 million dollars in savings.
He also projects academic benefits in creating the Community College of Connecticut, making it easier for students to take classes at any of the campuses.
All 12 existing locations would remain open, but administration could be slimmed down, eliminating positions including college presidents, chief financial officers, and provosts.
The plan is to be presented Thursday to the Board of Regents for Higher Education.
