Bevin: Connecticut "Wanted to Help Out" My Company

MSNBC

A Connecticut businessman running for the Republican Senate nomination in Kentucky is taking on charges that he's not conservative enough.

Matt Bevin owns the Bevin Brothers Manufacturing Company in East Hampton, Connecticut. After the factory was destroyed in a fire last year, he received $100,000 in state grants to help him rebuild.

He's challenging Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in next year's primary and McConnell's ads have referred to his challenger as "Bailout Bevin."

In an interview with MSNBC's Luke Russert, Bevin was asked about that grant and a photo of him and Senator Richard Blumenthal, who Russert called one of the most liberal members of the Senate.

"Do you know any elected officials from Connecticut that would not considered fairly liberal? The fact is: this is Connecticut. The company is in Connecticut," said Bevin.

"It was the state who sought out the position that they wanted to help out this company," he added.

Bevin has been described as a Tea Party candidate, but he said he's not a member of the Tea Party.
