The Connecticut Supreme Court will hear an appeal in a case brought by Newtown families against gun maker Remington Arms. The families are arguing that the manufacturer shouldn't have marketed and sold military-style weapons to civilians.
In October, a state court judge dismissed the case brought by nine families and a survivor of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. The judge ruled that federal law shielded manufacturers from most lawsuits over the criminal use of their guns.
But, this week, the state’s Supreme Court decided it would hear the appeal of that decision. Attorney Josh Koskoff represents the plaintiffs, and he said his clients were comforted by the news.
“We felt all along that, at the end of the day, the case was going to end up at the supreme court because it is such a significant and precedent setting case," Koskoff said, adding that he expects the case to be heard early next year.
Efforts to reach lawyers for Remington were unsuccessful.
