Cafero to Retire
House Republican leader Larry Cafero of Norwalk has announced that he is retiring after 22 years in the legislature and eight years as caucus leader. Cafero is known for his outspoken speeches on the floor of the state House of Representatives on a wide variety of high-profile issues, including the death penalty, gun control, crime, education and the state budget.
Common Core Panel Meets
The governor-appointed panel that is developing recommendations on how best to implement the Common Core education standards met for the first time on Tuesday. Committee members declared their support and offered optimistic views of the controversial initiative. Governor Malloy created the 25-member Educator's Common Core Implementation Task Force under an executive order signed earlier this month.
State Reaches Settlement with Publishers of eBooks
Connecticut readers are receiving payment this week from a settlement with five major publishers in a resolution over claims that they illegally set eBook prices. Readers in the state will get about $3 million of the $166 million settlement in a case brought by attorneys general from more than 30 states, including Connecticut.
