The Meaning of Logos, Brands, and Identities

It’s a logo that has become synonymous with the state of Connecticut...or at least it’s athletic teams. Of course, I’m talking about Jonathan the Husky.

But the friendly looking dog, looking off to the side, with his tongue hanging out is being replaced with a fiercer looking dog.

Kyle Muncy, the Assistant Director of Athletics for Trademark Licensing at UConn says the old logo didn't connect with some in the community.

"It is a logo that is certainly well known by people within the state and people that are long-time fans of UConn but it is not a logo that resonated with our student athletes or our coaches," said Muncy.

Today, we’ll talk about the logos and branding with graphic designers Peter Good and Jan Cummings. They created the other iconic Connecticut logo...for the Hartford Whalers...and our "Where We Live" logo. We’ll also talk about what makes a good logo and brand with Troy Monroe from CO:LAB.
