A ceremony was held today formalizing the creation of UConn’s new campus in downtown Hartford at the site of the former Hartford Times building. Governor Dannel Malloy was on hand along with other state officials signing necessary documents to complete the move. The campus would be home to about 2,300 students and about 250 faculty members.
Federal Regulators Inspect Millstone Plant
Federal regulators have begun an inspection of Connecticut’s nuclear power plant after a power outage last month forced both units to shut down. The water was slightly contaminated by radioactivity. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced it began an inspection on Monday to examine the response by Millstone Power Station following the outage.
State to End Year With $43.4 Million Budget Surplus
State Comptroller Kevin Lembo says Connecticut is on track to end the current fiscal year with a $43.4 million budget surplus. He says revenues which fund the state’s General Fund are running $40.6 million below the original budget targets. The fiscal year ends June 30.
Special Election Will Be Held for Late Representative's Seat
Governor Malloy has been officially notified of an opening in the Connecticut House of Representatives. He has until June 11 to issue a Special Election to choose a successor to Republican state Rep. Larry Miller, who died over the weekend. Miller was first elected in 1990 to represent the 122nd Assembly District, which includes Shelton and parts of Stratford and Trumbull.
Foley Plans to Accept Public Campaign Financing
Republican Tom Foley said today that he will be accepting public financing in the race for governor. Foley is the first Republican to qualify for $1.35 million in financing for the gubernatorial primary on August 12. The winner of the Republican primary will receive $6.5 million in public funding to run in the general election this fall against incumbent Governor Malloy.
