Governor Dannel Malloy has told New Britain officials he'll do what he can to help the city find money for an emergency winter shelter for the homeless. But soon after the meeting Thursday, he said the city would likely have to rely on a "cobbled together" plan for funding.
The New Britain Herald reports that the governor cited charities and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He said the state makes some money available, but that it would have to be "cobbled together."
Mayor Erin Stewart said Malloy made no promises about getting $137,000 in annual funding that was cut by HUD. New Britain used that money to open an overflow shelter for people living on the streets who didn't have access to two year-round homeless shelters.
