Sen. Murphy To Biden: Work With Nonprofits To Quickly Settle Immigrant Children

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut wants the Biden Administration to speed up the processing of unaccompanied children at the Mexican border.

Murphy chairs the Homeland Security Subcommittee of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee. Last week he visited a detention facility in El Paso, Texas. He said the conditions there are not good. That's why he urges the Biden Administration to quickly resettle the children. He suggests working with nonprofit groups like IRIS, the Connecticut-based Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services.

“We need to be working with groups like IRIS that know how to resettle kids and families,” Murphy said.

Chris George is the executive director of IRIS. He said they can help.

“We are ready to do that. We have the capacity to do that. We have the experience. We’ve got federal contracts already. So the government knows about us,” George said.

George said the group supports President Joe Biden’s push for broader immigration reform and the acceptance of more immigrants.
