The Connecticut State Board of Education has approved four new charter schools, including two in Bridgeport.
The board announcement Wednesday night also said the other schools are in Stamford and New Haven.
The Bridgeport schools are Great Oaks Charter School, which will specialize in students learning English, and Capital Prep Harbor School, modeled after Hartford's Capital Prep Magnet School.
The Stamford Charter School for Excellence will be modeled after the Bronx Charter School for Excellence in New York City. Its focus will be on students learning English, special needs students, and those with lower family incomes.
The Booker T. Washington Academy in New Haven will serve students living in poverty, particularly in the Dixwell/NewHallville neighborhoods.
Connecticut has 18 state charter schools serving about 7,000 students, or about 1.3 percent of public school students.
