Bridgeport's City Council has approved a massive solar energy project this week that could bring thousands of solar panels to a former city landfill. The city of Bridgeport will lease about 16 acres of the space to United Illuminating. UI’s ratepayers will pick up the roughly $35 million tab to build the array.
The state Department of Labor has cited New London for violations contributing to a hazardous work environment at a transfer station. A man was killed in January after apparently falling into a trash compactor. The Day of New London reports the agency fined New London $9,000 for a “willful” violation related to failure to have railings installed.
Video Cameras on Metro North Trains
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it plans to install video cameras and audio recorders onboard most Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road trains. The move is in response to safety recommendations by the National Transportation Safety Board following a Metro-North derailment in December that killed four people in the Bronx.
USS New Mexico Travels to Arctic Ocean
A Connecticut-based attack submarine has traveled to the Arctic Ocean for Navy exercises intended to test capabilities in harsh conditions. Groton-based USS New Mexico joined attack submarine USS Hampton out of San Diego for Arctic exercises that began on Wednesday.
Judge Dismisses Ownership Claims
A federal judge in Connecticut has dismissed the claims of a man who said he owned a Van Gogh painting that's been on display at Yale University for 50 years. Yale’s request to deny the claims of Pierre Konowaloff was granted on Thursday. Konowaloff says the painting "The Night Cafe" was stolen from his family during the Russian revolution.
