Health Care Union Launches TV Ad to Address Job Cut Threat

One of the largest state employee unions in the Hartford area has launched a television ad campaign to address the threat of more than 1,000 job cuts amid Connecticut's budget shortfall.

SEIU District 1199, the health care and social service union, represents 7,600 state workers, a group that includes nurses, direct care workers and others.

In a 30-second spot dubbed "One Connecticut," employees describe themselves as parents, siblings and neighbors who provide key public services, such as caring for veterans and children with mental illness. The ad began running Monday and was provided first to The Associated Press.

The ad came weeks after Democratic Governor Dannel Malloy offered a revised $19.8 billion state budget for the new fiscal year which reduced the state workforce by more than 1,000 employees to help address the state's deficit problems.

The Associated Press is one of the largest and most trusted sources of independent newsgathering, supplying a steady stream of news to its members, international subscribers and commercial customers. AP is neither privately owned nor government-funded; instead, it's a not-for-profit news cooperative owned by its American newspaper and broadcast members.

Federal funding is gone.

Congress has eliminated all funding for public media.
