The movie that had the biggest impact on the Academy Awards over the last ten years is one that did not win best picture ... or even get nominated - it was  "The Dark Knight," Christopher Nolan's 2008 Batman movie that was shunned in 2009.

It was smart. It was critically acclaimed. It contained -- just barely contained -- an absolutely stunning performance by Heath Ledger. Audiences loved it. It earned tons of money for lots of people. And yet somehow it wasn't nominated, because it didn't fit a certain kind of mold. For more about what that mold is, see "The King's Speech" a really good looking historical drama with intimidating British actors and a story about triumphing over a handicap. Game, set, match.
 
Back to "The Dark Knight." The Academy sensed that something had gone wrong. So now we have ten best picture nominees. How about just figuring it out right?
