Cox Communications will provide eligible families with school-age children home Internet for $9.95 a month.
Meriden is one of more than two dozen locations around the country where low-income households will get high-speed Internet service under a federal program announced by the president Wednesday.
President Obama announced the program in Oklahoma, warning that the United States is at risk of falling behind countries like South Korea. He said low-in come students should have Internet access regardless of ability to pay.
Cox Communications will provide eligible families with school-age children home internet for $9.95 a month through what’s known as the “ConnectHome” program. Meriden is one of four markets served by Cox Communications taking part in the program.
“At-home access to broadband Internet is essential to ensure that our children have the technology skills they need to keep up with their peers and succeed in the 21st century,” Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty said. She cautioned that what should be a necessity is a luxury for many low-income families.
