Governor Dannel Malloy is ordering $13.7 million in additional mid-year budget cuts as Connecticut's current fiscal year deficit continues to grow. The Democrat sent a letter Wednesday to the leaders of the General Assembly's budget-writing committee, providing them a list of cuts he is making to executive branch agencies and higher education.

Malloy did not request similar cuts in legislative or judicial branch spending.

State Comptroller Kevin Lembo is projecting that Connecticut's general fund — the state's main spending account — will end the current fiscal year on June 30 nearly $173 million in deficit. That’s $40 million above recent projections from Malloy's budget office. Malloy proposed $590 million in cuts to current services during February’s budget address.

The vast majority of these cuts are choices that, under ideal circumstances, Connecticut would not have to make,” Malloy said during his address.

The legislature's nonpartisan Office of Fiscal Analysis says the deficit is $191 million.
