New Haven Police say they don’t yet know the whereabouts of a suspect who shot one of their officers. A police captain who reportedly tried to intervene in a shooting near the corner of Dixwell Avenue and Henry Street Monday night is in recovery after he was seriously injured.
The person not only fired at and hit Capt. Anthony Duff, but also killed someone.
Chief Otoniel Reyes of the New Haven Police said the suspect is still at large.
“We’re standing here with this community to express outrage about two of our community members who were victims of violence—one of them being a police officer who almost lost his life," he said in a press conference Tuesday evening.
Duff is out of the operating room at Yale New Haven Hospital and Reyes says that he’s expected to make a full recovery. Reyes said that Duff was wounded while trying to help the person who was shot to death.
New Haven Mayor Toni Harp said she visited Duff in the hospital.
“Police officers do the opposite of what our instinct is,” Harp said. “They run toward danger, instead of away from it. We should respect them because their motto ‘to protect and serve’ is just not words. It’s something that they live.”
The New Haven Register identified the slain victim as a “young black man” and reported that the man’s next of kin had yet to be contacted as of Tuesday evening.
“We do not have the person in custody yet, but we’re going to expend every resource we have to identify and arrest this person,” Reyes said of the shooter. “We will find you and we will bring you to justice.”
