Homegrown pharmaceutical company Alexion will break ground on its new headquarters in New Haven Monday. As WNPR's Harriet Jones reports, the move will also mean future hiring.

Alexion will build an eleven story global headquarters in New Haven's downtown crossing redevelopment, investing $100 million. The company began as an offshoot of research carried out at Yale, but moved out to Cheshire about 13 years ago, so spokesman Irving Adler says this is viewed as a homecoming.

"We'll be in an area of the city that we think is especially exciting, and we will of course be within the larger Yale academic and business community."

Alexion, which develops therapies for rare diseases including a blood disorder, became one of the Malloy administration's First Five companies last year, and Adler says this move will allow them to continue hiring.

"We had about 350 employees at that time. We have already added nearly 100 new employees in Cheshire where we're currently based. In New Haven, we'll be adding perhaps another one or two hundred more on top of that."

Malloy and New Haven mayor John DeStefano are expected to be among the guests at Monday's groundbreaking ceremony.
