Bradley to Get New Transatlantic Service

Creative Commons

Bradley International Airport is once again to get a transatlantic flight. Governor Dannel Malloy is expected to announce on Wednesday that Irish carrier Aer Lingus will add service between Hartford and Dublin soon.

Bradley hasn’t had a direct connection to Europe since Northwest canceled its service to Amsterdam in 2008. Connecticut officials have been lobbying hard for the Aer Lingus deal — it’s thought the airline has been offered $5 million in incentives to establish the service.

There have also been recent rumors that a Norwegian discount airline may be interested in Bradley as an origin for cut price transatlantic service.

Cuts Coming at ESPN?

ESPN isn’t commenting, but Bloomberg reports that the sports cable network may cut as many as 350 jobs today. The rumored cuts come after ESPN’s owners, Disney said that earnings at its cable holdings don’t meet company forecasts because subscriptions are declining. ESPN has more than 4,000 employees at its Bristol headquarters.

UTC Profits Decline

United Technologies had a tough third quarter, seeing a 17 percent decline in profits from continuing operations. The Hartford-based industrial conglomerate did beat Wall Street’s expectations however, by some six cents a share. Revenue was down, blamed on the strong dollar and on a delay in jet engine deliveries from Pratt & Whitney.

UTC said it will use the cash proceeds from its recently agreed sale of Sikorsky to buy back shares, both this year and next.
