City officials in Waterbury say they are in the middle of a significant resurgence of the coronavirus after 60 positive cases in a two-day period.

Adam Rinko, director of emergency services for the city, said the 60 cases were reported from Thursday to Saturday morning. The city’s police chief and an aide to the mayor are among those who have tested positive for the virus.

Rinko said the virus appears to be spreading mostly from family member to family member.

“A lot of the spread is someone in the home has it and has been asymptomatic, and other family members have gotten it,” said Rinko.

To combat that, Rinko said officials are urging all residents to get tested, with or without symptoms.

“The clear-cut end to this is massive testing, social distancing and mask wearing,” said Rinko. “Those three items have shown an unbelievable amount of reduction.”

The city has two free COVID-19 tests set up that don’t require a prescription. Rinko said the city’s public service departments will move more of their functions online to aid the process of social distancing.
