Task Force Makes Mental Health Recommendations; Governor Signs Pet Shop Legislation

A task force created after the Newtown school shooting is recommending state lawmakers take steps toward improvement of mental health services to children and young adults. The 20-member panel, charged with examining mental health services for people between the ages of 16 and 25 released 47 recommendations on Tuesday for the General Assembly to consider when it reconvenes in January.

Governor Malloy Signs Pet Store Legislation

Governor Dannel Malloy signed legislation today that attempts to toughen standards for Connecticut pet stores. The legislation takes effect on October 1. The bill prohibits pet shops from buying or selling cats and dogs from breeders who have violated the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s animal welfare regulations.

West Hartford Teen Reunited With Her Parents

Justina Pelletier, the Connecticut teen who was the focus of a long custody fight between her parents and Massachusetts officials, is back home with her parents today. Her family pushed Massachusetts to return their daughter, whose case hinged on dueling diagnoses of Justina’s condition. The Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services said yesterday that the decision was the result of the state’s collaboration with the Pelletier family to create a reunification plan.

Connecticut Police Official Dies

A high-ranking Connecticut State Police official has died following a brief illness and surgery. Major William Podgorski, 49, of Farmington suffered from an undisclosed illness and died Monday at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Podgorski was a 24-year veteran of the force and was commander of the Western District. He leaves behind a wife and three children.

Protein Sciences Extends Vaccine Contract

Meriden’s Protein Sciences has been awarded a multi-million dollar extension to its contract with the federal government to provide flu vaccines. Protein Sciences has developed a new way to grow vaccines that uses cell culture and doesn’t involve chicken eggs. In 2009, the company signed a contract with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. This second extension of the contract runs through the end of next year, and is worth $50.6 million.

Federal funding is gone.

Congress has eliminated all funding for public media.
