America's greatest living film critic David Edelstein comes to our studios today for a discussion of current films and, inevitably, the experience of seeing a film here in 2012.
His colleagues A.O. Scott and Manohla Dargis recently suggested that the segmentation of the movie audience into Netflix streamers, DVD buyers, on demand viewers, and people who actually still "go to the movies" may be having some good effects, at least in terms of tempting major film makers to make movies that will reward many repeated viewings and a deeper, more passionate form of engagement.
On the other side of the ledger, there's the growing phenomenon of 3D movies that seem to teeter on the brink of breaking out of the cinema category and entering, more accurately, the genre of theme park rides. I'm sure we'll talk about all this and more today.
