Foxwoods Resort Casino has announced plans to close parts of one of its casinos on weekdays, and lay off employees. This is the latest bid to brings costs under control as its gaming receipts continue to drop.
Foxwoods will close table games and a portion of the slot machines at its Rainmaker Casino during the week, citing the need to improve operational efficiency. The Rainmaker is one of six casinos on the Foxwoods property.
The organization said it will make staffing adjustments over the next four weeks, and that both management and hourly employees will be affected. But it won't say how many jobs will go, and the dealers union at Foxwoods said it hasn't yet had details of the layoffs.
The casino has seen consistent declines in slot revenue over recent years, and there have been periodic layoffs in that time. Earlier this year, Foxwoods laid off more than 100 dealers. It has a workforce of almost 6,000 employees.
Foxwoods CEO Scott Butera noted in a statement that the competitive landscape continues to change. The casino is likely to face further declines in business as gaming expands in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York.
