Anthem Customers Await Health Care Confirmations

Health insurer Anthem is still playing catch up on issuing enrollment confirmation to Connecticut consumers who’ve signed up for coverage through the state’s health care exchange.

Many people who signed up last month and who’ve paid their first month’s premium still don’t have an ID card. Anthem’s parent, Wellpoint, has admitted it’s having similar problems in 14 different markets around the country.

Governor Dannel Malloy said he personally met with company executives to get assurances that they’re fixing the issue. "They clearly, on a national basis, were underprepared," he said, "and that is a disappointment. They, like the federal government, decided to have a single system, in this case to represent all 14 markets that they were active in. I think the surge they saw, particularly in December, they were underprepared for; that’s the reality."

Anthem has set up a walk-in center where people can receive their ID cards on the spot. Connecticut’s Insurance Department said it’s been receiving multiple calls a day related to the issue.
