  • Tribune Co., which owns the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun and other daily newspapers, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The conglomerate also owns TV stations, the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field. It's been crushed by a drop in advertising and $13 billion in debt.

  • A small group of musicians is trying to preserve American folk music. Members of the Field Recorders' Collective want to introduce these recordings to a new generation of musicians online.
  • Fifty years ago this month, a high school in suburban Cleveland hosted an early concert by Elvis Presley. A crew recorded the event, but the film later disappeared. As David C. Barnett of member station WCPN reports, the missing footage is a sort of holy grail for Elvis fans.

  • President-elect Barack Obama says despite the enormous task a head, he's as hopeful as ever that the U.S. will endure and prevail and fulfill the dreams of its founders. Obama addressed the crowd gathered for a celebrity-packed concert at the Lincoln Memorial Sunday. Some estimates put the attendance as high as several hundred thousand.
  • A new film and comedy tour features Muslim-American comedians. They are trying to bridge cultural gaps through humor.
  • The U.S. government aggressively prosecutes cases of domestic slavery — except when the employer is a diplomat. Diplomatic immunity limits the ability to prosecute, even when servants are recognized as victims of human trafficking.
  • President Bush met Monday with the Turkish prime minister — in hopes of defusing a conflict at the Iraqi border between Turkey and Kurdish militants. The president also spoke about the crisis in Pakistan, where President Gen. Pervez Musharraf declared emergency rule Saturday.
