  • "Riverdance" is an Irish musical which has been playing in London and Dublin since last year. Now it is in the United States for a brief run at Radio City Music Hall. The show evolved from a seven-minute intermission piece into a full-length show. Creator Bill Whelan [WHEEL-an] has taken traditional Irish dance, music, and song and fused it with contemporary influences from around the world, anywhere the Irish diaspora may have reached. He says this represents a new, dynamic sound that still has unmistakable Irish roots. (8:00) (IN STEREO).   • NPR's Barbara Bradley reports that today the Federal Communications Commission is issuing new rules intended to make local phone service more competitive. The unanimous F-C-C vote completes an overhaul that opens the local marketplace to long distance and cable T-V companies as well as other competitors. About a dozen states are working to get competitors into their local phone businesses to go head to head with the regional Bell companies. The so-called Baby Bells have had a lock on the market until now.
  • NPR's Jim Zarroli reports the nation moved one step closer to a digital television broadcasting system today. The Federal Communications Commission, in a 4 - 0 vote, proposed rules that would match each of the nation's 1,600 television stations with a digital channel. The stations will continue broadcasting on their existing channels while making the changeover, a process that's expected to take up to 15 years.
  • Voice artist and animation historian KEITH SCOTT has written the new book "The Moose That Roared: The Story of Jay Ward, Bill Scott, a Flying Squirrel, and a Talking Moose" (St. Martin's Press) The book is about the creator (Jay Ward) and writer (Bill Scott) of the popular Rocky & Bullwinkle TV cartoon show of the late 1950s, early 60s. The new film "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle" is based on the characters and stars Robert Deniro, Rene Russo, and Jason Alexander. SCOTT also is the voice of Bullwinkle in the film.
