Malloy Makes Judicial Nominations; Feds Order Metro-North to Prioritize Safety

Governor Dannel Malloy nominated Eliot Prescott of West Hartford and Raheem Mullins of Cromwell to serve as judges of the Connecticut Appellate Court. Malloy also nominated 16 attorneys to become judges of the Superior Court, two to serve as Family Support Magistrates, and one to serve as a Workers’ Compensation.

In a report released on Friday, the Federal Railroad Administration said Metro North's emphasis on on-time performance has led to a deficient safety culture that has increased risk and reduced safety. The agency has ordered the railroad to immediately “prioritize safety above all else.”

Connecticut Job Growth Increases 

Connecticut employers added more than 1,800 jobs last year, which is a growth rate of more than one percent and the best year since 2006 –before the recession. The unemployment rate fell from eight percent in January 2013 to 7.4 percent in December.

Hepatitis Screenings for Baby Boomers

Connecticut lawmakers are considering a bill that would require primary health care providers to offer baby boomers a screening test for Hepatitis C---which is a contagious liver disease. The proposed legislation would affect patients born between 1945 and 1965.

Federal funding is gone.

Congress has eliminated all funding for public media.
