A new panel has begun a two-year review of issues facing sex offenders and victims in Connecticut, including whether changes need to be made to the state's sex offender registry.
A special committee of the Connecticut Sentencing Commission met for the first time on Wednesday. It agreed to form subcommittees that will examine sex offender sentencing, management of sex offenders, and the needs of the community and victims.
Housing was mentioned frequently Wednesday as a major issue facing sex offenders.
Eduardo Palmieri, the state's deputy director of adult probation, said many offenders no longer have ties with family members. He said transient or homeless offenders are difficult to manage and their risk of committing new crimes increases.
The special committee has until 2017 to submit a final report to lawmakers.
