The Connecticut state Department of Labor is expecting to issue layoff notices to dozens of its employees as the result of cuts in federal funding.
Department spokeswoman Nancy Steffens said the federal government is providing the department with $28 million less than expected this year, and the state expects a $32 million shortfall next year.
Steffens said that has forced the department to consider closing or consolidating offices. She said some layoffs appear inevitable, but no final decisions have been made.
The state sent a letter to union leaders saying as many as 95 jobs could be cut when the new federal budget year begins on October 1.
Steffens said federal funding provides the money for 700 of the department's 800 employees.
