  • 8. Daniel talks with Jackie Pflug, who was shot 11 years ago by a terrorist who was part of a group that hiijacked an Egyptian airplane. Ms. Pflug was one of 5 people who were shot and one of three who survived. This week a Federal court jury here in Washington D.C. found the man guilty of that hiijacking. Ms. Pflug recalls for us the ordeal she went thru and how she's moved on with her life.

  • - Daniel talks with John White, a professor of political science at Catholic University in Washington D.C....and Ruy Teixiera (ROO-e tuh-SHARE-uh) of the Economic Policy Institute, also in Washington. Today is the 25th anniversary of the 26th Amendment to the Consitution. It's the one that gave 18 year olds the right to vote. Both men say that the percentage of 18-20 year olds who acutally vote has dropped since the Amendment was approved in 1971.
  • - Tom visits National Geographic's Explorers' Hall in Washington, D.C. to meet Juanita, the five-hundred year old mummy discovered in Peru last year. Juanita was an Inca human sacrifice. She was around 13 years old at the time of her death. Her body has been frozen all these years and is extremely well preserved. Tom talks with archaeologist Johan Reinhard who found Juanita about the circumstances of her death and the significance of her discovery.
  • -Tom talks to Dr. C. Eric Lincoln about the historical significance of the black church to the African American community. Lincoln wrote a highly praised book on the black church a few years ago. He says the church has always played an important role in the African American community and is still strong in spite of the He recent burnings of black churches in the South. He described those attacks, as tactics used by racists to intimidate African Americans.

    Robert speaks with Marjorie Miller, Los Angeles Times Bureau Chief in Jerusalem, about the meeting in Gaza today of the Palestine National Council. For decades, the P-N-C has been the government in exile for Palestinians. This is the group's first meeting in territory controlled by Palestinians and Yasser Arafat is asking the council to remove their constitutional clause calling for the destruction of Israel. Many of the participants have rejected any accommodation with Israel in the past.
  • Gasoline prices in the United States are higher than they've been since before the Gulf War. As Joe Smith from member station W-C-P-N in Cleveland reports, one of the reasons for the higher prices is that oil companies have been keeping inventories low, in part because they've expected crude oil prices to drop.
  • Beth Fertig of member station W-N-Y-C reports on the deteriorating condition of New York City Public School buildings. According to a study by the General Accounting Office, one-third of the nation's school buildings need major repairs. Fertig visits Public School 73 in Brooklyn, which is still heated by coal, and where the walls need to be repaired.
