A Brass Blast: Tubas, Trumpets, And Trombones

Why do we have, in our studio today, a whole bunch of trumpet players, plus a trombonist, French horn player and what do you call someone who plays the tuba?  A tubist?  A tubaist? A tubista? 

Anyway, they're here for a complicated set of reasons, but maybe at the heart of it all is an abiding concern for music education. One aspect of the federal budget sequester is the slicing of about $4 billion in education funding.  When school budgets get smaller, one of the first things to go is music education. Last week, Chad  Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and outfielder-turned-guitarist Bernie Williams were in Washington lobbying politicians.  
 
Today you'll meet some local brasstivists -- people of the bell and mouthpiece -- who want to share their love for their instruments and make sure future generations get to follow in the trails of their spit valves.
