Targets for "expense reductions" have not been set, but The Hartford Courant's parent company, Tribune, confirmed that it has asked newspaper managers to look for areas they could cut back. According to a report by The Los Angeles Times, there will be staff reductions but they have not determined how many jobs will be affected.
These cuts could reduce The Courant's already decimated staff even further. A recent feature in Connecticut Magazine reports that between 2008 and 2009, the newsroom had been reduced by 45 percent, from 245 employees to 135.
This is another turn for Tribune, which just emerged from bankruptcy late last year. The Courant is expected to be separated from FoxCT, which initially combined forces in 2009.
There have been rumors of potential buyers for America's Oldest Continuously Published Newspaper, but none have materialized.
