A West Hartford law firm has filed suit against several independent electric suppliers in the state, accusing them of price gouging and deceptive business practices.
The suits were filed by Izard Nobel on behalf of consumers who believe they were overcharged or weren’t told they were on a variable rates. The companies sued are North American Power and Gas, Viridian Energy, Direct Energy Services and Discount Power.
Interest-Free Offer Under Scrutiny
Bob’s Discount Furniture is under investigation by state officials over complaints about its interest-free financing offers. The Manchester based chain is accused by a consumer group of inadequate disclosures over penalty interest if loans are not paid on time. Madison-based truthinadvertising.org said that in some instances, customers have been charged 28 percent interest applied to the entire loan term.
Trinity Wins Downtown Hartford Bid
Trinity College wants to buy a major building on Constitution Plaza in downtown Hartford. The college bid just over $2 million for the former Travelers Education Center in an online auction.
Trinity said it wants to move some classes from its Summit Street campus to the new downtown location. College President Joanne Berger-Sweeney spoke of the purchase as an “opportunity..to go boldly and engage more fully with our city.”
