Opponents carried these signs at a FERC public hearing on the project.

The controversial Northeast Energy Direct natural gas pipeline is now in the hands of the federal government.Kinder Morgan filed its formal application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Friday. The 400-plus mile pipeline would run through Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Environmental groups and many politicians throughout the Northeast have opposed the $5 billion project.

“We do have a very good record and I am not aware of a project that – after we start the process – that we have pulled out of, unless there’s a commercial change of some sort, or that FERC has rejected,” Kinder Morgan Vice President of Public Affairs Allen Fore told WAMC in 2014.

FERC’s review is expected to take about a year.
