A record-breaking 2.3 million New Englanders are expected to be hitting the road this Fourth of July weekend, driving more than 50 miles from home.

Lloyd Albert, a spokesman for AAA Northeast, says people have more money to travel during the holiday weekend this year.

“We have low unemployment, we have high consumer confidence, we have low gas prices,” Albert said. “We’re looking at gas prices that will be the lowest that we’ve seen since 2005.”

Usually gas prices tend to go up during the summer months, but Albert says the oil market’s conditions this year are working in motorists’ favor.

“We’re finding capacity is up, oil prices are down –to about $45 a gallon. All of that, is creating a price of about $2.29 a gallon right now,” Albert said.

Across the country, there will be a record-breaking number of 44.2 million people on the road.
