Pequot Tribal Treasurer Resigns

The treasurer of the tribe that owns Foxwoods Resort Casino has resigned from the tribal council as he awaits trial on federal theft charges, the Associated Press reports.

Steven Thomas was charged in January with stealing $700,000 from his Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. He has pleaded not guilty. The tribal council said in a statement Wednesday that it is grateful for his hard work and dedication and that it wishes him the best in future endeavors.

Thomas is accused of stealing the money between 2005 and 2008, when he was assistant director of the tribe's natural resources department. He was indicted along with his brother, former tribal chairman Michael Thomas, who was convicted in July of embezzling $100,000 from the tribe.
