Report Finds Metro-North Defects; Bill Introduced to Protect Kids From E-Cigarettes

Federal inspectors found more than 7,100 defects and deficiencies in the Metro-North Railroad over the last decade, but records show regulators launched an investigation only after two high-profile accidents last year. In an open records request by Hearst Media, federal inspection reports between 2003 and 2013 show inspectors last year found broken joint bars and loose or missing rail braces that hold tracks to the ties in Bridgeport, Norwalk, New Haven and Stamford.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal and U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty were in Hartford on Monday to introduce legislation to prevent the marketing of e-cigarettes to children. The day marks the start of National Public Health Week .

Attorney General to Seek a Second Term

Attorney George Jepsen is filing the paperwork today to run for a second term .  Jepsen is using the public campaign system,  and will have to raise 75-thousand dollars in contributions under one-hundred dollars in order to qualify for the $750,000.

Kennedy, Jr. Preparing Announcement for Connecticut Senatorial Bid 

Ted Kennedy Jr.---The son of the late U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts is said to be making an announcement on Tuesday that he intends to seek the Democratic nomination for Connecticut’s 12th Senatorial District. 52 yr old Kennedy is a health care lawyer from Branford.

Large Employeers Would Pay Millions if Labor Committee Bill Passes

About 27 percent of households in Connecticut that are poor enough to qualify for food stamps have at least one worker. A bill that passed out of the state legislature's labor committee last month would require employers with at least 500 workers in the state to pay 130 percent of the minimum wage, or pay a $1 penalty to the state for every working hour paid below that rate.

Huskies Advance

Connecticut surged ahead in the second half Sunday to advance to the NCAA championship game. The Lady Huskies will meet Notre Dame tomorrow.The victory over Stanford keeps the Huskies in contention for dual double national championships. The men's basketball team is in Kentucky for the final tonight.
