Governor Dannel Malloy is being honored in Washington, D.C. for his efforts to bolster affordable housing in Connecticut. The National Low Income Housing Coalition presented Malloy with the Edward W. Brook Housing Leadership Award on Tuesday at the group’s annual Housing Leadership Awards Reception.
The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded a $7.5 million grant to the University of Connecticut and two other universities to find ways to analyze and upgrade security protection for ultra-tiny computer hardware. UConn’s Center for Hardware Assurance, Security and Engineering will anchor the so-called nanoscale initiative with the University of Maryland and Rice University.
Electric Boat Contract
The U.S. Navy has given Groton shipyard Electric Boat the largest shipbuilding contract ever awarded. The $17.6 billion deal is an order for ten Virginia class submarines, and it funds work on two boats per year. That rate of work has been a long-term goal for the Connecticut yard as a way to stabilize its waterfront workforce.
Bill Allows Nurse Practitioners to Practice Independently
A law that would change the health care landscape in Connecticut was on its way to the Governor’s desk on Monday.The law would allow nurse practitioners to practice on their own--- independently of doctors. The law comes at a time when the state is facing a shortage of primary care physicians. The bill was given final approval in the House on Monday.
United Illuminating Inspection Program
United Illuminating has started a pole inspection program, and will fix and in some cases, replace 140,000 utility poles over the next six years. The plan is to check each pole to make sure that all have UI lines and equipment, which will help maintain the reliability of customers’ electric service.
