Metro-North Broadens Test for Bicycles on Trains

Metro-North Railroad is launching a pilot program to offer its broadest tryout yet of bicycle racks on trains.

Judd Everhart, spokesman for the Connecticut Department of Transportation, said Metro-North will install two racks apiece on 50 cars by November.

The Connecticut Post reports that if the racks get used -- and get good reviews by employees, bicyclists and commuters -- the state will outfit the rest of the M8 rail car fleet.

Everhart said there is no timetable for a final decision if racks are fully installed.

Bicycles will still be banned at rush hour between 6:00 am and 10:00 am, and 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Paul Hammer, a cycling advocate, said it's an incremental step. He said advocates are disappointed at still having to push for bicycles on all trains.
