Connecticut’s Department of Developmental Services says it will cut 605 positions, as it seeks to privatize some of its functions. Commissioner Morna Murray wrote to the Office of Policy and Management this week saying the cuts are necessary to save the department $48.6 million in this fiscal year, and $69.3 million next year.
She said the department will rely on community based care provided by non-profit organizations to make up the shortfall in its own ability to provide services.
Possible Gas Merger
Danbury based Praxair is considering a merger with Germany’s Linde AG. The deal would create the world’s largest industrial gas company with a market value of more than $60 billion.
But antitrust experts have warned the two would likely face major regulatory hurdles. The deal would cut the number of global industrial gas suppliers from four to three, and could give the merged company 36 percent of the US market. The two have said so far the talks are in the preliminary stage.
CCAT Wins Rhode Island Nod
The Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, which helps companies access and incorporate innovative manufacturing methods, is reaching out to companies in Rhode Island. East Hartford-based CCAT says its formed an alliance with the Rhode Island Manufacturers Association and will act as an innovation center for its members.
The association will provide matching grants to companies who want to access CCAT’s expertise to increase their efficiency and profitability.
