Yale New Haven Health Merger With Lawrence and Memorial Hospital Approved

Connecticut Health I-Team

Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London will merge with Yale New Haven Health. The long-pending deal got the go-ahead from Connecticut's Office of Health Care Access late Thursday -- the last regulatory approval the partnership needed.

L&M said the deal will shore up its financial position, but the hospital will still operate independently with its own fiduciary board. Yale has said it will honor all existing labor contracts at L&M; unions at the New London facility have not opposed the partnership outright, but say they’ll hold leadership accountable for putting patients’ needs first.

No More "Name Your Own Price"

Priceline.com is no longer a travel auction site. The name-your-own-price business model that made the Norwalk company a success has now been dropped altogether.

Priceline had been moving customers away from the feature, offering set price discounted packages instead. Experts say consolidation in the airline industry had made the bidding feature less successful in any case.

Energy Deal

The owner of a controversial gas pipeline that crosses the corner of Connecticut has agreed a merger that will create the largest energy infrastructure company in North America. Houston’s Spectra Energy, which operated the Algonquin pipeline, will be acquired by Enbridge, which is based in Calgary, Canada.

The proposed expansion of the Algonquin pipeline has proved contentious in the Northeast, as regulators try to protect ratepayers from shouldering the cost of the project.
