The Obama Administration has announced more than $400 million in job-training grants to community colleges and universities nationwide. Two Connecticut schools will receive more than $4 million in funding: Capital Community College in Hartford, and Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport.
They’re part of the Northern Resiliency Consortium, a collaboration among seven community colleges in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York. In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, the Newtown shootings and the Boston Marathon bombings, the schools will use the funds to train health care, information technology and environmental workers who play critical roles in times of crises.
"Community colleges play a vital role in training Americans to meet the needs of employers today," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "As our economy continues to rebuild, businesses are looking for employees with the skills their company needs to stay competitive, and America's students and adult workers want to be equipped to fill those roles. These grants help to meet those demands, providing critical investments in education and supporting key partnerships."
