According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), roughly one in five adults in the U.S. experiences a mental illness each year -- that’s approximately 20 percent of all American adults. But even as awareness increases, the stigma associated with mental illness persists.

This hour, we find out how one Connecticut nonprofit is encouraging young people to help destigmatize mental illness -- by sharing their stories through a program called Write On!.

And later, Yale School of Medicine Professor Vinod Srihari joins us. Together, we discuss efforts to bolster mental health care for today's young adults.

GUESTS:

  • Janet Reynolds - Instructor for Write On!, writer, editor, and former High School English teacher
  • Jaime Heiner - Write On! participant and Connecticut resident
  • Sam - Write On! participant and Connecticut resident
  • Dr. Vinod Srihari - Associate professor of psychiatry at the Yale School Medicine; director of the Specialized Treatment Early in Psychosis (STEP) Program
