Governor Dannel Malloy discussed his college affordability proposal today at Naugatuck Community College in Waterbury. He was joined by state treasurer Denise Nappier. Governor Malloy is proposing the creation of a Baby Scholars program, which would offer new parents up to a two-hundred and fifty dollar investment in a tax-free college savings account for their child. Malloy says there are an estimated 130,000 people in Connecticut who began working toward a degree but did not graduate.
A legislative panel has decided that public employees, including teachers experiencing violent events such as the Newtown School shootings, should have their mental-health treatments paid under state Workers' Compensation law. The bill now heads to the House floor and other committees.
Grid Operator Says Lack of Pipelines Pushing Wholesale Prices Higher
ISO New England says a lack of pipelines is making natural gas more expensive and pushing up wholesale electricity prices in the region by 55 percent last year. The electric grid operator says the average price of wholesale electric energy rose to about $56 per megawatt hour, up from a historic low of $36 in 2012.
Carecentrix Adding Workers
Healthcare management company Carecentrix says it's adding workers at its downtown Hartford location. The company provides home healthcare management services to help patients avoid lengthy hospital stays. The company now plans to add 150 jobs this year and expand its office space.
Aquarion Water Company to Credit Customers
Since 2007, Bridgeport-based Aquarion Water company has overpaid $29 million in taxes because of changes in federal accounting regulations. State officials say as a result-- the company will cut water rates by more than 5.5 percent for 3 years beginning in January.
