Millions of dollars from outside groups are flowing into Connecticut's tight race for governor despite a widely heralded, publicly-funded campaign financing system that's intended to stem the flow of outside money.
Two political action committees -- one supporting Democratic Governor Dannel Malloy, and the other supporting Republican businessman Tom Foley -- have so far amassed a total of nearly $5.5 million in contributions. Most of it is being spent on TV advertising.
Other groups, including gun rights and gun control advocates, are also pumping money into the election.
Both Malloy and Foley are participating in the public system, and have about $6.5 million apiece to spend.
The flow of "independent expenditures" into Connecticut has prompted advocates to seek changes to the 2005 state law, including more information about the people ultimately financing these third-party groups.
