How Could College Sports Be Reformed?

Don't get me wrong. I like watching college sports, but I wonder what it is we're watching.

One assumption a lot of people make is that college sports pays for itself, but the Knight Commission found the majority of colleges require institutional funds to pay for athletic spending. That's a pretty difficult thing to look at because so many costs are carried off the books.

Take UConn. On paper, the athletic department comes close to breaking even, but that's because many of its major costs appear to be accounted for elsewhere. Debt service on the $91 million football stadium does not appear on the books. And the state of the art football practice facility required $31 million in state bonds.
