A Minimalist Effort from Rocker PJ Harvey

British rocker PJ Harvey talks with NPR's Linda Wertheimer about creating music for her latest album, Uh Huh Her.

Harvey relied on basic home-recording techniques and spare instrumentation, and says the songs are more autobiographical than on her recent albums.

PJ (Polly Jean) Harvey broke onto the British rock scene in 1991 with her striking debut CD, Dry. Her tough, riff-based songs were a hit with independent music fans at a time when they had a rapidly growing number of artists to choose from.

Uh Huh Her is Harvey's seventh album. Her fifth CD, Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea, won her and her two bandmates England's prestigious Mercury Prize in 2001. She has also worked on soundtracks for several films, and made an appearance as Mary Magdalene in 1998 Hal Hartley movie The Book Of Life.
