NPR listeners share messages for their moms

AYESHA RASCOE, HOST:

Mother's Day, the day to thank our moms and mom figures for all they've done for us. On yesterday's show, Scott asked listeners to share their thank-yous to their moms. Not surprisingly, we got a ton of responses. Y'all love y'all mamas. I wish we could read them all, but we can't. Here are some that stood out to us.

Our first letter is from Jeff Lexen (ph), who's also writing on behalf of his brother, Ed. Jeff writes, thank you, Mom, for the ginger ale to ease an upset stomach, the heating pad to relieve an earache, the back rubs to gently rest us from our slumber. But most of all, thank you for unconditional love.

Diane Davis (ph) called and left a voice message from Yellow Springs, Ohio. She wanted to tell us about the person she said held a special place as her best mother, Miss Eleanor McCann (ph).

DIANE DAVIS: She was my piano teacher in the 1950s, and she was kind of an outrageous maiden lady who drove a tan Volkswagen convertible with an Isadora Duncan-style scarf waving in the breeze, rhinestone sunglasses, gold teeth, red lipstick and a wonderful sense of who she was. She loved me, cherished me and had the uncanny wisdom to understand all the things I never said about my own unspeakably cruel mother. Thank you, Miss Eleanor McCann.

RASCOE: Dana Elsner (ph) from Seattle has a whole childhood to thank her mother for.

DANA ELSNER: To my mom, Sue, thank you for being my own personal camp counselor, making games, celebrating curiosities, doing skits and silly costumes and setting off on adventures right from the front door throughout my childhood and still to this day. Thank you, Mom. I love you.

RASCOE: And finally, I want to thank my mom, Phyllis, for showing me how to live a life that is joyful and thankful regardless of the circumstances. No matter what you've gone through - and you've gone through so much - you've always maintained your faith and your grace, and I love you so much for it. Thank you to everyone who wrote. And, of course, Happy Mother's Day. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
