Michael Price Says Goodbye to Goodspeed

The Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam Connecticut was built in 1876 on the bank of the Connecticut River

It doesn't really even make any sense what has happened at the Goodspeed Opera House every since  Michael Price took over the late 1960s. East Haddam, which is conveniently located near absolutely nothing, has played host to Mike Nichols, IdinaMenzel, Jerry Herman, Mark Hamill, Kristin Chenoweth, Sutton Foster, Julie Andrews...I could go on.

From the loins of that building, a former Department of Transportation storage facility that was headed for demolition have sprung almost twenty Broadway musicals including "Annie" and "Man of La Mancha."

Big stars are almost beside the point. When the Goodspeed is great, it's usually because a very tight cast of twenty or so pros is overflowing onto that tiny stage inside that hunk of gorgeous gingerbread perched on that big river.

This hour, meet the man behind that magic.

GUEST:

  • Michael Price is the Executive Director of Goodspeed Opera House

Colin McEnroe is a radio host, newspaper columnist, magazine writer, author, playwright, lecturer, moderator, college instructor and occasional singer. Colin can be reached at colin@ctpublic.org.
