Sen. Murphy to Visit Middle East to Review Military Operations

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy is leaving for the Middle East to review operations against the Islamic State.

The Connecticut Democrat, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, left Tuesday and is set to return Sunday. He is traveling with fellow Democrat Michigan Senator Gary Peters, a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

The two lawmakers say they'll meet with officials in Iraq, Jordan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Murphy and Peters will discuss military operations in Iraq and Syria and visit a refugee camp in Jordan to learn about how the U.S. and its allies help provide humanitarian assistance to millions of Syrian refugees.

In 2013, Murphy opposed a resolution to authorize a U.S. strike against Syria when it was voted on in the Foreign Relations Committee.
