The Scramble On The Chief Of Staff's Role, And The Sportsification Of American Policy

Petty Officer 2nd Class Cory J. Mendenhall
/
US Coast Guard Academy
Incoming White House Chief of Staff Secretary John F. Kelly speaks to the Corps of Cadets at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., Oct. 2, 2014.

Last week, the "skinny" repeal of the Affordable Care Act died a buzzer-beating (and perhaps temporary) death on the Senate floor. The Ringer's Bryan Curtis notes that, "Minus the life-and-death part, it had the feel of an unexpectedly competitive Pac-12 football game that the country noticed in installments."

And: We've been told for years that Donald Trump is a dealmaker, right? The Negotiator in Chief? A salesman to make Alec Baldwin's Glengarry Glen Ross character proud. Through that lens, National Review's Kevin Williamson finds a different corollary: Jack Lemon's sad sack Sheldon Levine.

And finally: You may have heard: Reince Priebus is out, and Secretary John F. Kelly is in. We look at the role of the chief of staff with Chris Whipple, author of The Gatekeepers: How the White House Chiefs of Staff Define Every Presidency.

GUESTS:

  • Bryan Curtis - Editor-at-large at The Ringer
  • Kevin Williamson - Roving correspondent for National Review
  • Chris Whipple - Author of The Gatekeepers: How the White House Chiefs of Staff Define Every Presidency
